"After Lyle's shut up shop earlier this year, we've been waiting for confirmation of what would be taking over the Shoreditch site - now we know it's going to be an east London branch of Hoppers, joining the existing restaurants in Soho, Marylebone and King's Cross. Given that JKS Restaurants were backers of Lyle's, it's not surprising that the group is installing another one of its brands in the space (Karan Gokani founded Hoppers with JKS in 2015)."
"The new Hoppers will be a little different from the other three locations in that it'll look beyond Sri Lanka and feature dishes from South India, specifically curries, dosas, biryanis and street food from Chettinad, Madurai, Bangalore, Kochi and Chennai. Plenty of Hoppers' classics will also be on the menu, with a drinks list that also takes inspiration from South India."
"This opening marks a very exciting new chapter for us. Over the past decade, Sri Lanka has been at the heart of what we do but our Indian heritage and journeys through South India have opened up a world of flavours, traditions and stories that have greatly inspired us. At Shoreditch, we will celebrate many of the lesser known regions and dishes of South India while continuing to connect the dots between Lanka and India in a way that feels fresh, vibrant and deeply personal."
Hoppers will open a Shoreditch restaurant in the Tea Building at 56 Shoreditch High Street, London E1, scheduled for early 2026. The site follows the closure of Lyle's and will be the group's fourth London location, joining restaurants in Soho, Marylebone and King's Cross. JKS Restaurants, which backed Lyle's, co-founded Hoppers with Karan Gokani in 2015. The Shoreditch menu will expand beyond Sri Lankan dishes to showcase South Indian curries, dosas, biryanis and street food from Chettinad, Madurai, Bangalore, Kochi and Chennai. Many Hoppers classics will remain, and the drinks list will draw on South Indian inspirations. Website: hopperslondon.com
