The shelters were first dreamed up by Captain George C Armstrong as a solution to cabbies holing up in pubs during bad weather, ensuring drivers had enough strength to continue without relying on alcohol.
Dr Nicola Stacey expressed pride in preserving the 13 shelters, which are considered unique London landmarks and a Victorian solution to the city's bustling streets.
