"Without a doubt I find that the communication is very similar in the operating theatre and a place like a warship," says Alex Oliver, who left the Royal Navy and now works at London's Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. He emphasizes that both environments require clear communication and teamwork to achieve common goals amid high-stakes situations.
"Each person has a fundamental role, or they wouldn't be there," Mr Oliver said. This highlights the importance of each individual's contribution in both military and hospital settings, reinforcing the idea that success relies on everyone's participation.
"Because of the pace, you have to be direct, you have to have confidence in your team and in your own skills," Mr Oliver explains. This reflects the fast-paced nature of surgical environments and the necessity for strong interpersonal connections among team members.
"For the patient, it's one of the biggest, most important days of their lives potentially," Oliver adds. His insight underlines the emotional significance of surgery for patients, indicating the need for compassion and effective rapport-building between medical staff and patients.
