Demonstrator Conall O Brolchain expressed his frustrations as a long-term Tottenham resident, stating that his community faces increasing rent rises that push them out of their homes. 'I've found my community there but we're constantly experiencing rent rises, we're constantly being pushed out of flats because we can't afford them any more,' he lamented, sharing how he was forced to vacate his last residence due to a staggering 51% rent hike, reflecting the lack of renter protections.
Iola Isaac, highlighting the dire conditions some tenants face, described her rental situation as 'diabolical,' recounting experiences of an electrical fire alongside persistent issues like damp, mould, and rodents. 'You name it, we've had it - it's known as the house of horrors,' she remarked. Isaac criticized major landlords for neglecting repairs, sharing that one landlord spent a whopping £300,000 to temporarily house her after neglecting urgent fix-ups, adding it's 'depressing' to keep fighting for basic standards.
