Detectives have appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened shortly after 11.30pm on Friday on Vicarage Road, at its junction with Tile Kiln Lane, Bexley.
The car involved failed to stop after the crash, leading to a police investigation that resulted in the arrest of a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Police said the 60-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene despite the quick response from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance.
Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage from the vicinity at that time to contact them.
