London drivers pay more than 70m in Ulez fines
Briefly

Over the past six years, London drivers have incurred over £70 million in penalty charge notices due to the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), with Croydon borough contributing the most at £4 million. ULEZ has expanded several times since its 2019 implementation to cover more areas in London, aimed at promoting cleaner air. In 2024 alone, nearly 1 million PCNs were issued, although refunds related to ULEZ reached £2.4 million. Despite the penalties, over 96% of vehicles in the zone now comply with emissions standards, reflecting a shift towards greener vehicles.
"The Ulez is not about making money. Any income generated from the Ulez is being reinvested back into the public transport network, including improving bus routes in outer London."
"The expanded Ulez has led to cleaner air while generating ever smaller net revenues, as has been the case with the previous expansion to inner London where people switched to greener vehicles."
