Hospitals may close without upgrades, bosses fear
Briefly

Several London hospitals face urgent safety issues due to delayed redevelopment funding, some projects postponed until 2038. St Helier Hospital reports severe infrastructure problems, forcing demolition of a ward and impacting patient care significantly. Other hospitals like St Mary's and Charing Cross are also affected by the funding delays. Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed that Hillingdon Hospital would receive funding in the 2025-2030 range, while many others lament the long wait for critical upgrades, fearing they may soon have to close due to deteriorating conditions.
"This is devastating news for our patients. Many parts of our estate are already crumbling. It's only a matter of time before other parts of our hospital become unsafe for treating patients."
"Following a review of the New Hospital Programme, it will now not receive funding to start the project until 2032-2034. We now need to plan and prepare for the catastrophic failure of our buildings."
