Florist reduces waste by giving blooms a new life
Briefly

Ursula Stone established The Flower Bank in New Barnet, north London, to address flower waste by repurposing blooms nearing their shelf-life into beautiful arrangements. The charity donates these to care homes and sells them, while also running community flower arranging classes. These classes cater to various groups, including young offenders and individuals with mental health issues, fostering skill development and social connection. Stone's initiative not only makes flowers more affordable but also creates joy for those who typically wouldn’t have access to them, emphasizing community spirit and sustainability.
My rule to life is spontaneity. When I am on my way to pick up the flowers, that's when I am thinking of ideas of what to do with them.
I love the classes as it brings people together and creates a community that learns new skills. Not many others are doing this - it's completely unique, it's something to look forward to.
My reason for doing this is making the flowers affordable and bringing joy to people who wouldn't normally get them.
These classes not only help with skills but also provide social interaction, giving people something to look forward to and combating isolation.
