Johnny Scott, 26, caused nearly £25,000 in damage to Buckingham Palace gates when he crashed his vehicle on March 9. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order and prohibited from entering Buckingham Palace's vicinity. During sentencing, the judge emphasized the cultural importance of the site. Scott's defense pointed to a psychotic episode related to his bipolar disorder as the cause of his actions. He expressed remorse and was mandated to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £5,000 in compensation over two years.
At Westminster Magistrates' Court, District Judge Neeta Minhas told Scott: "You have caused a very high level of damage to a structure that is of huge cultural importance in the United Kingdom."
In mitigation, Aamina Khalid stated that Scott had experienced a "psychotic episode" and was "not able to understand what his actions were" as a result.
