Its main purpose was to support the microwave aerials used to carry telecoms traffic from London to the rest of the country.
The Top of the Tower, Britain's first revolving restaurant, was opened by the then postmaster general Anthony Wedgwood Benn, and Sir William Butlin on 19 May 1966.
