A new tunnel is set to be constructed under the Thames to improve electricity transmission between Gravesend and Tilbury, responding to the aging condition of the existing cable tunnel. With construction already underway, the new tunnel is designed to endure for at least 120 years, utilizing a traditional tunnel boring machine. Construction is expected to last about eight months, and additional structures known as headhouses will facilitate cable access and ventilation. The project reflects efforts to enhance the region's electrical infrastructure and biodiversity, with excavated soil potentially benefiting local wildlife.
As the electricity cables generate heat, air is pumped from Thurrock through the tunnel to Gravesend to cool it down again.
We are delighted our planning applications for the Grain to Tilbury project have been approved, and this marks a significant step forward in upgrading electricity infrastructure in the region.
