Kaoru Mitoma has been left out of Japan’s 26-man World Cup squad after suffering a hamstring injury in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Wolves. He will miss Brighton’s final two Premier League matches against Leeds United and Manchester United. Japan will play in Group F against the Netherlands on 14 June, Tunisia on 21 June, and Sweden five days later. Manager Hajime Moriyasu named the squad including Wataru Endo, Daichi Kamada, Ao Tanaka, and Daizen Maeda. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said the club must be patient with Mitoma’s recovery and cannot provide a clear return schedule. The World Cup begins on 11 June and is co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
