Japan have identified the quarter-finals as the target this summer after failing to progress past the last 16 on three of the past four occasions, with two of those disappointments coming after failures from the spot. The 2022 tournament was the worst, with the Samurai Blue, who should have seen off Croatia during normal time, losing the shootout 3-1 in dismal fashion.
MONACO -- Japan midfielder Takumi Minamino has torn the ACL in his left knee while playing for AS Monaco and will almost certainly miss the World Cup. Minamino was injured in a French Cup game on Sunday against Auxerre and "medical examinations revealed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament," Monaco posted on social media on Monday. Players typically need up to nine months to return from an ACL injury.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Alejandro Zendejas scored in the 30th minute, Folarin Balogun added a goal in the 64th and the United States stopped a seven-game winless streak against top 25 opponents by beating a Japan team of mostly second-string players 2-0 in a friendly on Tuesday night. The 15th-ranked U.S. was coming off a 2-0 loss to South Korea on Saturday in the first of eight friendlies before coach Mauricio Pochettino calls in players for training ahead of the World Cup.
