President Joe Biden announced on social media platform X his decision to end his re-election campaign, citing accomplishments like investments in rebuilding the nation, lowering prescription drug costs, and expanding health care coverage.
Biden stated that although he had planned to seek re-election, he believed stepping down was in the best interest of his party and the country to focus solely on his duties as President for the remainder of his term.
Biden becomes the first presidential nominee to withdraw from the race so close to the election or his party's nominating convention, in contrast to Lyndon B. Johnson's earlier decision in March 1968.
