Skadden Arps has struck a controversial $100 million pro bono deal with the Trump administration, as reported by the New York Times. This agreement contrasts sharply with Paul Weiss's $40 million commitment in the face of Trump’s objections. Skadden's deal allows them to avoid an Executive Order that targets law firms while requiring them to support politically disenfranchised groups and abandon their previous DEI initiatives. Additionally, the firm has pledged to fund Skadden fellowships, which has sparked disappointment among those who typically aspire to those roles due to the firm's perceived capitulation to Trump.
In comparison to the $40 million in pro bono services that PW committed, Skadden is on the hook for $100 million in pro bono payola.
Trump said: 'This was essentially a settlement. We appreciate Skadden coming to the table... It's a shame what's going on, it's a shame.'
Skadden also functionally disavowed their DEI efforts and committed to 'merit-based hiring, promotion and retention.'
Skadden promised to fund at least five Skadden fellows as part of the deal.
