Michelle Gutierrez, 32, was convicted of second-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of her husband, Cesar Reyes Zuna, on his birthday in 2021. Following a heated argument the night prior, Gutierrez attacked Zuna in their bedroom while he was asleep, using two knives, and ultimately ensured his death with a pulsometer. The incident was witnessed by their children, who attempted to intervene. Gutierrez later showed signs of remorse for the actions and cited mental health issues as part of her defense.
As her husband slept, prosecutors allege, Gutierrez grabbed two knives from their kitchen, locked the door to their bedroom, and used both knives to stab her husband repeatedly.
The couple had an argument the previous night, and she had asked a friend to come by in the morning to take her children to a relative's home.
