Richard Lopez, a 67-year-old California man, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempting to kill his girlfriend by repeatedly stabbing her with a steak knife at a Hawaii resort on September 1, 2022. Their violent altercation occurred at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort, resulting in life-threatening injuries to the woman. During his trial, Lopez claimed he was under extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the attack. He had been incarcerated with a bail set at $1 million prior to sentencing by the Kona Circuit Court.
