In August, DPS revoked trans folks' abilities to change the gender markers on their IDs, even when they have a court order or amended birth certificate.
Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw has suggested that changing gender markers on IDs may be based on "perceived gender identity," questioning the validity of such changes despite court orders.
McCraw's letter seeking to take the restrictions even further refers to sex as 'a binary and fixed biological fact,' negating the existence of intersex folks.
McCraw expressed skepticism about the distinction between sex and gender, stating that 'medical or surgical treatment... cannot change chromosomal biology,' thus challenging transgender identities.
