The new law in Mexico City bans murders against transgender women, referred to as transfemicide, with convicts facing 35 to 70 years in prison.
[Buenrostro's] memory is a symbol of fighting for trans women's rights beyond Mexico, shared Deputy Gabriela Quiroga Anguiano after the law's passage.
"I can feel represented before the law...violence really carries a severe punishment," said activist Kenya Cuevas, who pushed for the law after Buenrostro's murder.
