New 1st-in-the-nation CA legislation aims at phasing out ultra-processed foods in school meals
Briefly

California lawmaker Jesse Gabriel is set to announce legislation aimed at phasing out ultra-processed foods like soda and junk food in schools. Districts like Morgan Hill Unified School District have successfully reduced sugar intake significantly. Collaborating with organizations like Eat Real, schools are transitioning to healthier meal options, which could be tastier and potentially enhance revenue through increased meal participation. Experts highlight the health benefits of this shift, emphasizing that ultra-processed food is a major factor in declining health metrics among the youth.
"This decline in life expectancy, health span, and happiness span; the biggest single driver is actually preventable ultra-processed food-related disease," LaTorre said.
"When they make investments they're actually able to make more money and reinvest in school foods as they increase the participation," LaTorre said.
