Lucuma, known as the "gold of the Incas," is a South American superfruit celebrated for its sweet flavor reminiscent of sweet potato and caramel. Gaining popularity beyond its native Andean region, lucuma is becoming a favored ingredient in health-conscious foods like lattes and paleo bars. Its fine powder form is desirable due to its lower glycemic index compared to sugar, packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can enhance health. Moreover, lucuma may help mitigate sugar spikes in blood glucose levels, making it a healthier alternative to refined sugars.
"Unlike refined sugar, lucuma retains fiber, vitamins, and minerals, offering more than just empty calories," nutritionist Scott Keatley told Food and Wine.
In the Andean valley of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador - where it originates - it's often used as a natural sweetener, and it's even the most popular ice cream flavor in the region.
