Star player Mookie Betts could not participate, as he missed games due to illness. Manager Dave Roberts emphasized the importance of not rushing Betts back into play to avoid further injury, leading to veteran Miguel Rojas taking over the shortstop position. Rojas is recognized as a team leader and has previously filled in for Betts, showcasing his capabilities and experience at crucial moments.
"I think that we're really trying to be mindful of not just Opening Day, but not putting him in harm's way," Roberts said.
"Rojas is already one of the most respected players in the clubhouse and seen as a leader by his teammates," Roberts noted.
"He hasn't taken live at-bats or played in any games and not to put him in a position where he potentially could get hurt," Roberts emphasized.
Rojas stepped in for Betts last year when he suffered a fractured hand in June.
