In January 2023, we learned we'd have to rapidly develop a microblogging platform to rival Twitter. Our small team achieved what seemed impossible, launching Threads by July.
While we aimed for a cleaner, newer code base for Threads, we realized the immense value in the old code from Instagram, as real-world learnings accumulated over time can't be underestimated.
On launch day, we faced a critical failure with our system's scalability. It necessitated an urgent redesign to ensure that we could handle user demand effectively.
The foundational values of Threads revolved around text-first posting, maintaining Instagram's design ethos, fostering an open community akin to early Twitter, and prioritizing creators.
