The article argues against requiring licenses for AI training data, emphasizing the importance of fair use for machine learning (ML) and text and data mining (TDM) research. Licensing could complicate or inhibit valuable research that drives scientific advancements. Countries that protect TDM benefit from more research, while restrictive copyright laws have a stifling effect elsewhere. The critical role of ML in interpreting diverse data, including astronomical and biological information, underscores the need for accessible training resources to foster innovation and societal progress.
Without fair use, copyright would hinder important scientific advancements that benefit all of us. Researchers use TDM methodologies more in countries protecting such research.
Requiring researchers to license fair uses of AI training data could make socially valuable research based on machine learning and text and data mining prohibitively complicated.
