Rhode Island's RIBridges system went offline due to a cyberattack potentially compromising personal data of hundreds of thousands of people since 2019.
Governor Dan McKee indicated during a briefing that personal information such as names, addresses, and social security numbers may have been accessed by hackers.
State Chief Digital Officer Brian Tardiff clarified that the attack is characterized as an extortion attempt rather than ransomware, emphasizing the nature of the cybercriminal activities.
As a result of the breach, Rhode Islanders will struggle to access crucial state benefits while mailing application reminders and free credit monitoring are being organized for the victims.
