About 400,000 Californians due bigger Social Security payments under new federal law
Briefly

The legislation signed into law by President Biden will provide Social Security benefits to about 400,000 California recipients, retroactive to December 2023, highlighting a significant fairness issue for public workers.
Maria Freese, a senior legislative representative, stated this change "will have a significant impact on these retirees but this is also about a fairness issue," focusing on those impacted by the Windfall Elimination Provision.
The Social Security Administration is currently evaluating how to implement the Act and will provide more information as it becomes available, with beneficiaries set to receive back pay.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, eligible California public employees could see their benefits increased by an average of $360 to $1,190 monthly due to the recent legislative changes.
