An estimated 700,000 autistic individuals live in the UK, yet no feature-length films directed by them have received theatrical releases until now. Directed by five young autistic creators, The Stimming Pool is an experimental film showcasing their unique interests and perspectives over 12 days of shooting. Funded by the Wellcome Trust and featuring collaboration with professor Steven Eastwood, the film offers an authentic narrative, departing from traditional roles where autistic individuals must explain their experiences, thereby challenging existing documentary and drama conventions surrounding autism.
It's time for autistic people to have their own stories told authentically, breaking the cycle where they are required to explain themselves to others.
The Stimming Pool is an intricate collaboration, showcasing the perspectives of its autistic creators without standard commentary or captions, empowering the audience to interpret.
