Her recitals often included sing-alongs, inviting audiences to share in the music and storytelling traditions she cherished."
"In keeping with her commitment to education and empowerment, Ms. Boyce left instructions to establish a scholarship in honor of her grandmother Evelyn Flunder. This scholarship will support African American female undergraduates at UC Berkeley, ensuring that her legacy of mentorship and opportunity continues for generations to come. Ms. Boyce also produced numerous programs for the Berkeley and Davis community, highlighting African American history and culture through folk tales, dance, piano, and storytelling."
Lellingby Annabelle Barbara Boyce was born May 26, 1938, in Oakland and raised in Berkeley as the eldest of two daughters. She earned a BA, MA in History, and MLS in Education from UC Berkeley. She had a long public education career, known for intelligence, clear teaching, and preserving history and culture. She sang operatic arias, African American spirituals, Broadway classics, and art songs. She established a scholarship honoring her grandmother Evelyn Flunder for African American female UC Berkeley undergraduates. She produced community programs celebrating African American history through folk tales, dance, piano, and storytelling. She died peacefully in Davis at 87.
