Scientist reveals how often you should really be cleaning your sheets
Briefly

Cleaning bed linen is often neglected due to busy lifestyles. Regular washing is essential, according to microbiologist Dr. Primrose Freestone, who recommends changing sheets at least weekly. Those who sweat, are ill, or sleep with pets should wash more often. Washing removes sweat, oils, microbes, and allergens, preventing infections and allergic reactions. Skin cells and body sweat contribute to microbial growth, leading to skin issues. Bacteria break down sweat into odorous byproducts, emphasizing the importance of hygiene for sleep quality.
'While we often focus on how many hours we're getting, the quality of our sleep environment matters too,' said Professor Freestone. 'Regular laundering removes the biological soup of sweat, skin, dust and microbes, which helps to reduce allergic reactions, prevent infections and keep odours at bay.'
Washing linen removes body sweat, oils, microbes, allergens and dead skin cells, which can lead to infections and allergic reactions - not to mention other unsavoury stains.
Each night, we shed thousands of skin cells, excrete oils from our sebaceous glands, and sweat up to half a pint of fluid - even if we've showered just before bed.
Unfortunately, a gradual build-up of bacteria on your sheets can increase the likelihood of acne, eczema, itching and asthma.
