Ozempic Could Be Used to Treat Alcohol and Drug Addiction, Study Finds
Briefly

The study found that drugs like Ozempic can curb cravings not only for food but also for alcohol and opioids, leading to significantly lower rates of addiction-related issues.
"The existing medications for treating substance use disorder are underutilized and stigmatized. These medications intended for diabetes and weight loss can help addiction without the associated stigma," said biostatistician Fares Qeadan.
Medical experts saw a 50 percent lower rate of intoxication among individuals with alcohol use disorder prescribed GLP-1s, plus a 40 percent decrease in overdose rates for those with opioid use disorder.
While further research is necessary to confirm these findings, the study suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) might represent a new path in addiction therapy.
