NYC releases report on heat-related deaths in midst of first heat wave of summer
Briefly

According to the 2024 New York City Heat-Related Mortality Report, most heat-related deaths are 'heat-exacerbated,' worsening existing health conditions like heart disease. Roughly 350 city residents die annually due to heat-related causes, with about seven deaths directly caused by heat.
"Climate change is making our summers hotter and more deadly," warned Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan, emphasizing the increasing risks and impacts on public health posed by rising temperatures.
"New Yorkers must prepare for heat with the same seriousness as we prepare for weather emergencies like hurricanes, flash floods, or snowstorms," emphasized NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol, stressing the importance of being ready for extreme heat events.
