Living Under the Influence
Briefly

While so much seems to divide people in the United States, there is an issue that crosses just about every segment of the population. More people are living under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or both on a regular, if not daily, basis. Living under the influence is a way that a person may begin to become unable to care well for her own and her family's well-being as well as the well-being of her community.
In both sexes and across every age range, racial group, and geographic region but one, alcohol use has increased. When asked about alcohol consumption in the past year, 69.3% respondents reported they consumed alcohol, up from 69.03% in 2020. The more alarming news is that those who self-reported heavy drinking increased to 6.29% in 2022, which is up from 6.13% in 2020.
The biggest increase in heavy drinking was in the 40-49 age bracket. Their heavy drinking increased to 8.23% from 6.49% in 2020. The only region of the country that saw any decline in alcohol consumption was in the South, moving from 5.95% in 2020 to 5.63% in 2022.
It might surprise some people given stereotypes of "heavy drinkers," that women's heavy drinking increased more than men's, moving to 6.45% from 6.08% in 2020. There are still more men who are heavy drinkers, but the rise among women marks a troubling trend.
