Atelier Nyp, designed by Studio Bua, is a striking black cabin on a historic sheep shed's site in western Iceland, providing an artist's studio and guesthouse. It emphasizes sustainability by repurposing existing materials and cultural aesthetics. The thoughtful design incorporates one unit for the artist and a separate self-contained guest apartment for visitors. Its off-center roof reflects regional mountain peaks and aligns with local agricultural buildings. The cabin enjoys breathtaking views of Breidafjordur fjord, exemplifying a balance of modern living and respect for the landscape.
The cabin serves as both an artist's studio and a guesthouse, harmonizing with local architecture and emphasizing sustainable design through the reuse of existing materials.
"We approached the project from the point of view of sustainability and to maximise the existing resources, both material and cultural," said Studio Bua co-founder Sigrún Sumarliðadóttir.
The intentionally simple design complements the agricultural aesthetic, featuring an off-center pitched roof that draws inspiration from the surrounding mountain peaks.
Atelier Nyp divides space into two units—one for the artist and another self-contained guest unit, providing both functionality and privacy.
