Germany's food delivery market, dominated by companies like Lieferando, Uber Eats, and Wolt, has flourished since COVID. Despite the convenience and variety for consumers, foreign delivery drivers face numerous challenges. A recent exhibition highlighted workers' experiences, revealing concerns about safety and lack of support. Testimonies indicate a feeling of invisibility among drivers, as they often work under dangerous conditions without proper protective equipment, and are undervalued both by their employers and customers. This disparity raises questions about the treatment of essential workers in the gig economy.
One testimony read: "It was so dangerous working in the city at night. I was afraid for my life every day. People don't see you; they drive too fast."
Another rider shared, "The companies do not provide any safety equipment, like helmets or protective clothing, even when riding in hazardous conditions. It feels like we are invisible."
