How leading a postdoc network boosted my career prospects
Briefly

During my postdoc at the Max Planck Institute, I took on the role of financial officer for PostdocNet, advocating for the 3,000 postdocs in Germany and beyond. My passion for improving working conditions led to another year as a spokesperson, where I organized interdisciplinary meetings and represented postdocs to the Max Planck institutes and the German Federal Ministry. Despite the demanding nature of the role, which often required 10 hours a week alongside my research, I found it fulfilling and crucial in developing my communication skills and professional confidence.
I saw the value and necessity of networks that advocate for postdocs, paving the way for better opportunities for their future.
The role could be taxing; sometimes, the stress led to sleepless nights, but the work fulfilled me in ways my research could not.
I submitted a 3-minute pitch explaining why I wanted the role, and I won the nomination, improving my confidence and professionalism.
I was responsible for communication in the network and with external parties, representing all postdocs to ensure their interests were heard.
