Americans Are Comfortable Going Into Debt Buying Concert Tickets, Studies Find
Briefly

Amid recession fears, the live concert and entertainment sector remains resilient as consumers, particularly Gen Z, show an eagerness to spend on experiences. A significant 60% of Coachella attendees opted for payment plans due to rising ticket prices, averaging $135.92 in 2024. Studies reveal that Gen Z spent an average of $2,100 on tickets over two years, with many prioritizing these costs over savings. Financial expert Lindsay Bryan-Podvin highlights changing spending behaviors, emphasizing the value young people place on experiences despite the financial strain.
Gen Z concertgoers are even more willing to spend big when it comes to seeing their favorite artists. A Cash App survey found that Gen Z spent an average of $2,100 on concert tickets over the past two years, with 75% willing to pay premium resale prices for live shows.
Lindsay Bryan-Podvin, LMSW, Cash App's Financial Therapist, states, 'Gen Z's 'do it for the plot' approach to life may be eclipsing the Millennial YOLO when it comes to spending on music-centric experiences.'
About 19% of Gen Z respondents admitted to paying more than they can afford for concert tickets, indicating a significant trend in overspending despite economic pressures.
While saving for a house might feel out of reach, a weekend festival is doable. I love that they're spending in line with their values like community, experiences, and memory-making.
