In 2024, Americans are projected to be among the top five nationalities receiving first-time residency cards in France, with expectations of 13,000 new arrivals. This marks a 5.3% increase from 2023, demonstrating recent trends of Americans relocating abroad, often in response to political climates back home. Many new residents cite the Trump administration and the political environment as motivating factors, alongside desires for a higher quality of life and connections to family. Responses from recent transplants highlight diverse reasons for their move, revealing both personal and political motivations driving the trend.
"Trump, guns, expense, crowded, morale in US. Ready to retire," reader Debra Wahl told The Local as her explanation for why she had moved to south-west France in 2020.
"Always wanted to retire to Europe. France was a good fit for me. The final push was Trump," explained Patti Flaherty who moved to Paris in 2024.
"To get away from the politics over there and just the whole way of life seems much better over here," said David H. Bellingham who moved to Reims.
"The current political situation and general morale in the US were significant factors in my decision to relocate to France," stated another American expat.
