France: Le Pen defiant after being barred from office DW 03/31/2025
Briefly

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's far-right National Rally party, was banned from holding public office after a court found her guilty of misusing EU funds totaling $3 million. The ruling imposes a five-year ban, which could hinder her attempts to run in the 2027 presidential election. Le Pen expressed her determination to appeal the decision, asserting her innocence and that the ruling silences the voices of her supporters. She faces a four-year prison sentence, with two years suspended and two under house arrest, putting her political future in jeopardy.
"Let's be clear, I am eliminated but in reality its millions of French people whose voices have been eliminated," Le Pen told broadcaster TF1, adding she had no confidence in an appeal being heard before the 2027 French Presidential election.
"I am going to appeal because I am innocent," she said. "I'm not going to let myself be eliminated like this. I'm going to pursue whatever legal avenues I can. There is a small path. It's certainly narrow, but it exists."
