France aims to become a refuge for scientists disillusioned by US research conditions, especially regarding health and climate funding cuts. Following statements from research leader Philippe Baptiste, various French universities are initiating programs to support US researchers feeling threatened. Aix-Marseille University, in particular, is launching a three-year effort with a budget of €10-15 million to welcome American scientists. With a rapid influx of inquiries from researchers, France sees this as an opportunity to strengthen its own research landscape amidst turmoil in the US.
"Many well-known researchers are already questioning their future in the United States," France's minister for higher education and research, Philippe Baptiste, wrote in a letter to the country's institutions.
"You could call it a sad opportunity, but it's an opportunity all the same for French research," she told La Tribune. "It's time to position ourselves in this context."
