Britain's restaurant industry experienced a 1.8% growth in delivery and takeaway sales in May 2025, according to the latest CGA by NIQ Hospitality at Home Tracker. This growth follows a decline in April and is attributed to cooler, wetter weather, encouraging more at-home dining. Despite the increase, sales growth remains below the UK's inflation rate of 3.4%. Deliveries saw a significant growth of 4.1%, while takeaway sales dropped by 2.1%. Overall, this period reflects both the resilience and challenges of the hospitality sector, especially influenced by weather conditions.
Cool and wet weather made for a challenging May in hospitality, but deliveries have provided a brighter spot for restaurants. Nevertheless, growth of 1.8% is not enough to keep pace with inflation.
May's cooler and wetter weather proved more favourable to restaurants' at-home trading, as some people opted to stay at home and order food in.
