Calorie labels rarely influence choice, study finds
Briefly

A survey by researchers from LSHTM, University of Reading, and University of Exeter found that 70% of respondents did not notice calorie labels on takeaway menus. Among those who did notice them, 71% stated that it did not affect their food choices. The mandatory calorie labeling introduced in April 2022 aimed to promote healthier eating but proved insufficient alone. Taste and price were identified as the most vital factors in ordering takeaways, while healthiness ranked much lower. Many respondents favored alternative strategies to encourage healthier eating, focusing on systemic food industry changes.
Around 50% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that alternative interventions, such as traffic light labels and more healthy alternatives on the menus, would encourage them to make a healthier choice.
Taste and price were ranked the most important factors when deciding which takeaway to order, while healthiness and carbon footprint were ranked as least important.
