"The Farmer's Wife, the sandwich shop known as much for its artisanal ingredients as for its premium price tags, has officially shuttered both of its Bay Area locations. Following the September closure of her cafe at Sebastopol's The Barlow Market, owner Kendra Kolling closed her remaining Point Reyes Station location in early January. While Kolling told SFGATE the lunch counter at the West Marin Culture Shop was always a temporary placeholder until the Culture Shop's owners opened their own cafe concept, she admitted she had considered pulling the plug even sooner."
"In early 2025, Kolling awoke to a flood of hateful comments on her social media. Despite her not using Reddit, the viral post had spilled over to her Instagram. "They were calling me the most vile things, that it was beyond sandwiches," she said. "It was so hurtful and personal." At The Farmer's Wife, a grilled cheese with a side salad cost $22, while the priciest item on the menu, a steak and eggs sandwich with a side salad, cost $34."
The Farmer's Wife closed both Bay Area locations after the Sebastopol cafe shuttered in September and the Point Reyes Station shop closed in early January. The lunch counter at the West Marin Culture Shop operated as a temporary placeholder until the Culture Shop owners launched their own cafe. Business struggles intensified amid a cooling economy and a viral Reddit thread ridiculing menu prices. Kolling received hateful social media messages, including personal attacks that spread to Instagram. Sandwich prices ranged from $22 for a grilled cheese with salad to $34 for a steak and eggs sandwich with salad. Ingredients emphasized house-made and hyper-local products and the sandwiches had previously earned high acclaim.
