Dawn Porter expressed surprise that there wasn't already a documentary about Luther Vandross, stating, "He's the most famous singer a lot of people don't know," highlighting Vandross's lasting impact despite being lesser-known personally.
Porter shared her desire to venture beyond her usual political documentaries, saying, "I had never done a music documentary before...I was just in the mood for something a little different. You want to stretch and grow."
Producers Trish D. Chetty and Ged Doherty were instrumental in connecting Porter with the Vandross estate, with Porter noting, "They are the producers who really kind of got the family on board...they worked on it for years to get it."
