The past year has shown a significant shift in social media consumption, as many have turned to animal content for comfort amidst the turmoil of current events. This year particularly revealed a desperate clinging to the 'zoological world' as a much-needed escape from the overwhelming stress associated with human issues. The allure of these animal stories reveals a shared, deep-seated need for solace and distraction from distressing realities.
As I reflect on my Instagram habits, I realize that I’ve developed a strong aversion to human-centric content. Images of war, greed, and human struggle have become too painful to endure. It’s as if the flood of distressing human narratives has driven many to seek comfort in the simplicity and joy of animal stories. The comfort found in glimpses of animal life has become a refuge for many of us.
