Svenskt Tenn's exhibition 'Frank in the Loom' at Stockholm Design Week showcases a unique collection of limited-edition rag rugs made from Josef Frank fabrics. These handwoven pieces, created in Ukraine, reflect a rich history of textile culture while embracing sustainability. The exhibition features a working loom and draws inspiration from Margit Thorén's historic Schackruta rug, demonstrating the interplay between art, handcraft, and theory. As rag rugs regain popularity against a backdrop of hyperindustrialization, the collection highlights how tradition can innovate through contemporary practices.
The handwoven rag rug has always been a symbol of warmth, traditionally taking scraps of worn out woolen garments and weaving them into layers of color and texture, functional art.
Karin Södergren, Svenskt Tenn's Head Curator explains, 'The rug takes center stage in Svenskt Tenn's spring exhibition. In the store's Strandvägen Gallery, we've created an immersive experience that honors the craftsmanship and history of these textiles.'
