I was paralyzed and thought I couldn't walk again - now I'm running my first half marathon
Briefly

Shaunta-Maé Alexander, a 35-year-old children's book author and aspiring actress, has faced numerous health challenges throughout her life, including paralysis. Now, participating in her first half marathon at the United Airlines NYC Half, she embodies resilience through her involvement in the Athletes with Disabilities program. Guided by Peloton instructor Tunde Oyeneyin, Alexander's journey reflects her commitment to overcoming adversity. Diagnosed with Crohn's disease as a teenager, she navigated significant medical struggles, yet her determination has inspired her to embrace running and physical activity.
Alexander shared her early challenges: "I was the kid that had to have two bags, not just a backpack, but an extra bag with extra underwear, with diapers, with medicine, all these types of things, because I could not control my bowels and became sick in public."
Reflecting on her experience, Alexander stated, "I told God, if he could restore my walking, my movement, then I would walk like I've never walked before. I would run like I've never run before, and I would dance like I've never danced before."
