Hawa Hassan, a chef and entrepreneur, was displaced from Somalia as a child. Her experiences fueled her desire to explore her identity and connect with others like her. She spent three years traveling to eight war-affected countries, compiling a cookbook titled 'Setting a Place for Us,' which features recipes and personal stories from chefs and community members. Each chapter highlights a country's rich culinary heritage and personal narratives, challenging stereotypes and showcasing resilience within these communities. Her goal is to engage readers with the stories behind the dishes, encouraging a deeper understanding of displaced cultures.
"A lot of my childhood was spent wondering about my own background and my own identity... I had this deep desire to find people like myself and tell that story."
"My number-one goal is to tell a different story about what it means to be from these places... I hope that when people pick up this book, they come for the recipes, but they stay for the stories."
