The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has concluded its investigation into Microsoft's $13 billion partnership with OpenAI, although the conclusion left several concerns unresolved. The CMA found that Microsoft has significant influence over OpenAI but not sufficient control to denote a relevant merger situation. Therefore, the authority decided not to conduct a more in-depth investigation. Despite these findings, competition concerns remain unassured, as acknowledged by the CMA's own statements. Both Microsoft and OpenAI welcomed the decision, asserting their focus on fostering competition and innovation in the AI industry.
"A finding that the Partnership does not give rise to a relevant merger situation does not constitute a finding that no competition concerns arise from its operation," the CMA added.
"Our OpenAI partnership and its continued evolution promote competition, innovation, and responsible AI development, and we welcome the CMA's conclusion..." said a Microsoft spokesperson.
