The European Union has postponed its planned 50% tariffs on American whiskey, which were due to commence on April 1, as discussions with US officials continue. This move comes in retaliation to US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon voiced concerns that such tariffs could negatively affect the EU more than the US, especially regarding alcohol exports. Both Ireland and France are advocating for informed decisions on tariffs, noting that bourbon tariffs may harm European economies.
What we want to make sure is that any decision Europe takes, they're informed. We export a lot more alcohol and spirits and wine from Europe than we do import bourbon.
French prime minister Francois Bayrou has said the EU was probably mistaken in targeting American whiskey, while Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni has cautioned EU partners against escalating the trade dispute.
