The 27-nation bloc covers 4.2 million square kilometers, stretching from the Arctic in the north to the Mediterranean in the south and from the Atlantic to the Black Sea. With a population of 448.4 million, it has 24 official languages and around 60 other regional and minority languages.
Twenty EU members use the euro single currency, with varying price disparities within the bloc. The EU's body of law consists of 100,000 pages, covering around 17,000 pieces of legislation.
